Daoist priests or lay
Daoistsand the highest expression of calligraphic art was thought
to occur when the brush became the vehicle for the dynamism of
qi itself. In terms of paintingthe aim was similarly to capture the
innerdynamic reality of the subject and not merely its outward
form. The Song dynasty treatise on landscape painting Lofty
Message of Streams and Mountains(Linquan gaozhi ji) by Guo Xifor
instancecounsels that artists must gain an organic intuition of the

scene they are about to paint (Little2000p. 719). Once this
internal reality has been graspedthe artists may go back to their
studios and paint the scene based on the understanding they have
acquired. In this way the internal reality is the clue to realizing the
external form. External appearance and outward form are thus
secondary to the true nature of thingswhich is always internal and
always communicated in an intuitive andto a certain extentmys-
terious or obscure way. The best Chinese landscape paintings are
profound depictions of this internal mysterywelling up onto the
surface of the scroll in swirls of ink and colour.
