So to replace these two pitchers, the Astros have acquired to new pitchers.
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but once again failed to sign. In 2004, he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. Jim McIsaac His repertoire includes a two seam fastball that he throws at 93 mph, a changeup he grips like a splitter, a curveball notable for its sharp breaking action, a slider and a four seam fastball that reaches speeds in the mid nineties.
LaTroy Hawkins is gone, having left the Houston Astros for the Milwaukee Brewers. Jose Valverde's all but gone; any day now, Lincecum expect to hear of some other team signing him. Tim Lincecum won't be back in Houston, simply because the Astros feel he's too expensive and too much of an investment.
Richard Zowie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who blogs about the Houston Astros at Bleacher Report,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can be reached at [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] . He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said, The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
What's more, Feliz walks a little but strikes out a lot. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tim Lincecum is solid in the field, with a .964 career fielding percentage at third base.
The plan is to try to replace the departed with what you perceive to be the best available. Sometimes it works and other times it flops. Lincecum wonder if we're going to look back at the winter meetings and scratch our heads in a few months-especially if Houston has problems with its bullpen. I'm still hoping Houston will add a quality starter.
Feliz, whose surname means "glad" in Spanish, hit .266 with 12 home runs and 82 RBI last season in 158 games.
Granted, LaTroy Hawkins is 60-81 in his career it's common for relievers to lose more games than they win with a 4.52 ERA. One plus is that Hawkins is 36 while Lyon is 30. I'm guessing Houston's hoping that Lyon matures and becomes a pitching asset.
One has to wonder if Houston signed Feliz to be a place holder until following year in hopes of developing a good third baseman in the minors or in case someone more lucrative is available. They tell Feliz is a honorable power hitter although 12 homers in 158 games isn't a whole lot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though Tim Lincecum did average at least 20 big flies in his final four years with the San Francisco Giants. His career batting average is .254 and his career on-base percentage is .293. Yikes.
This deal confuses me. Why would you give a three-year deal to a guy who went 6-5 and had 29 combined saves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but who had a 4.70 ERA?
Memo to Lindstrom-try to pitch in ways where players will hit the ball to straightaway center field in Minute Maid. To my knowledge, nobody's ever smacked it over the 436 foot sign. If you allow a right-handed power hitter like Albert Pujols to pull the ball, you can stick a fork in it. Just ask Brad Lidge.
One has to wonder if Ed Wade's a Napoleon Dynamite fan and kept screaming at Drayton McLane, "VOTE FOR PEDRO. VOTE FOR PEDRO."
Last but not least, Houston concluded the Winter Meetings today by signing free agent third-baseman Pedro Feliz to a one-year, USD4.5 million contract.
Only time will tell if these is good deals.
Through free agency, the 'Stros have also acquired right-hander Brandon Lyon, who was signed to a three-year deal.
The first is right-hander Matt Lindstrom, who came over from the Florida Marlins. He's 29 and throws gas, with a fastball that's around 100 mph. One positive that Lindstrom brings is that Tim Lincecum converted 13 of 15 save opportunities last year. The negative is that last season his ERA was a whopping 5.89 and Tim Lincecum dealt with elbow problems. Despite his occasional struggles of a year ago, some think Tim Lincecum may be the team's following closer.
