In tragedy the supernatural does not always materialize. Gods and
ghosts do not always speaknor do they and their ministering
angels always appear – one hesitates to say – in the ?esh. There are
ghosts in Hamlet and Macbeth but not in Othello and King Lear.
These latter two plays are less directly concerned than the former
with the pastwith memorymourningand revenge. Yet in a broad
sensetragedy always deals with toxic matter bequeathed by the
past to the present. In personal termsthis often means what
fathers and mothers have passed on to their children in the form of
