the original Celestial Masters’ community (2002pp. 32–3).

Strickmann’s definition of Daoist identity equates Daoism with
ordination. Although this way of defining Daoist identity has the
advantage of clarity and precisionand avoids the problems of eth-
nic-based definitionsthe problem is that it does not adequately
reflect the sociological situation of Daoism in the modern period
with its development of monastic Daoism and lay Daoist associa-
tions. The narrow Strickmann definition thus represents only one
major strand of the teachings and practices that have traditionally
