A few days later at the general conference of the SCM in EisenachEberhard
delivered the keynote addresstitled “The Religiosity of Today’s Youth.” To confront
his old friends and fellow SCM comradeshe picked the youth movement as his
theme – a decidedly challenging topic for these seekingreligiously motivated young
people. Eberhard quoted a representative of the Free Germans: “We need a new
Christ. We have had enough of people like Marx. Institutions are easier to change
than souls.” Statements such as these were like outstretched hands that simply
had to be grased. Many of his listeners understood this; others grew uneasy. One
conference member wrote in the Small Wartime Newsletter for Academics
“It was a
keen wind that blew at Eisenachperhaps too keenbut many things became clear
all the same.”
Later a smaller group decided to hike up to the Wartburg. On the summit
they held what would become known as the “Wartburg discussion on religion.” It
proved to be the highlight of the conference. The discussion probed deeplyand
Eberhard’s message found acceptance. One of those present declared“We must
