The third-and-long plays would generally feature slower-developing plays. If [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]'s protection held up well enough, the quarterback would have extra time to process information,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that extra time could explain his improved performance in those situations.
Bernie Miklasz and I have both wondered why St. Louis Rams quarterback [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has fared so much better on third-and-long than when the team needed 3-7 yards for a first down.
The long and short of it with Sam Bradford
As noted Tuesday, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has completed 20 of 31 passes for 309 yards, two touchdowns and a 118.9 rating on third-and-8 or longer. His rating is only 55.1 between third-and-3 and third-and-7.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is a smart player, but he's young and still gaining the experience needed to make good decisions quickly.
This seems counterintuitive.
It's just a theory, but it makes some sense.
I ran the disparity past ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer recently and he offered a theory. Though Dilfer hadn't studied these plays involving [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] specifically, he noticed earlier in the season how well [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] performed when the rookie had even one extra second to process information before delivering the ball. Plays designed to convert shorter third-down distances often require quick throws, giving quarterbacks less time to size up the defense.
